ORIGINAL REVIEW: 4 November 2004 |
I think the beer saves this place - without the excellent selection of cask ales it wouldn't be any better than average. The staff behind the bar seemed to be a grumpy old lot and not really sure what they were up to on this visit - although maybe that's not always the case. The place itself seemed too big and open plan - despite being a Wetherspoon's it didn't have the same proper pub feel as the Monks Retreat. There were a few booths to sit in, but the tables were all out in the open in a big square shaped pub. The big draw is the cheap food and beer - the place was packed out for Thursday curry night - but soon emptied once everyone had taken the deal up. The Baron had usual positive aspects that make Wetherspoon's good places to eat and drink - but for me not the best Wetherspoon's in town. G.

BEER EXPERIENCE |
The Wetherspoons forumla is good news meaning a good selection of beer. The regulars were Marston's Predigree, Burton Bitter and Fullers London Pride. The rotating cask ales were Loddon Bamboozle, Mauldon's Black Adder and another that's slipped the old brain cells. The Burton Bitter was nice enough - but slightly bland I thought and it was served up with a oversized head. More of a session beer than anything else but very drinkable on the plus side. G.
I couldn't be doing with the Burton really. Seemed a bit of nothing to me. Good selction of beers though and well remembered. I don't think we could read the clip from where we were sitting on the last one but you did go up to check it out so if you think really hard you might remember. S.
Nope, it's not happening. Something goose. Guzzling Goose? G.
