RE-REVIEW: 20 September 2008 |
Ok - I have now been back a few times and this place is has undergone a transformation of the Optimus Prime variety and is quite literally a million times better than it was. Great food and very good, albeit small selection, of proper beer. No-one will go home unhappy, whether you are popping down for lunch or a drink or meal in the evening. Take mine and many others words for it and get down there for a few beers and whilst you are there, you may as well have the sausage sandwich. I did, and I didn't regret it one bit. S.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: 4 December 2004 |
The Moderation is a bit rough around the edges, but not hell-like as we'd been led to believe by people earlier in the night in other pubs! Not a sniff of trouble - it was late Saturday night and everyone seemed to be having a good time with the Saturday disco. The guy behind the bar seemed friendly and there was no problems with our crowd doubling the numbers in the pub. The place is a bit basic and it would be fair to say that the decoration is minimal and not recently done either. Apprantly the ladies bogs were being used by gents and the gents were more than a bit errr... messy. As Paul noted - they need to do something with the exposed wiring - it might be a safety hazard! The signs behind the bar raised a smile though, and look out for the interesting collection of postcards. G.
Oh yes, but all things considered we thought this place was a jolly good laugh old chap. Full of surprises. Not all good granted, but all surprises. Apparently this was a good night as everyone seemed to be happy and no-one started a fight at all whilst we were there and that is pretty rare. Basic, but the locals seemed happy and as no-one else was there thats what counts on this occasion I think. I think i'll quit whilst I am ahead though and I probably wont come back. S.

BEER EXPERIENCE |
Not much going on with the choice of beverages behind the bar. There's no real ale and usually the bitter choice is Boddingtons and Tetleys Extra Cold - the Tetleys wasn't available on this visit though. Not a huge fan of the Boddingtons. There were a few lagers and maybe something like ten different spirits available in total. G.
As I said before if we are reduced to drinking boiddies we are really touching the bottom of the barrel. Not much going on beerwise but they had a lovely random selcetion of alcol pops (i.e. aftershocks) behind the bar. S.

"You should go back to the Moderation, it's totally changed (much improved) and has a nice range of beers on...."

"I had a very good evening with my mates at the Moderation a few evenings ago. It is NOT one of those carbon copy pubs which all look the same. This pub has a charactor of it's own...it just needs of a lick of paint!

"The Moderation has a very good bunch of regulars and their always up for a laugh. As for the decor, yeah it does need a good revamp. We don't have a wide range of drinks but its suits the regulars and any other custom we get..."

"The Moderation is the archetypal nuissance pub which serves no more purpose than to exist for the meager handful of "local" patrons to drink in excess and start all out war on each other once outside. The pub itself must be the worse in Reading to boot. It is lacking severly in variety of Beer the decor is retro but this is not done on purpose I just think the pub hasn't been well maintained since the 80's at least. I like to employ the sticky carpet/floor experiment, the more difficult it is to lift your feet the worse the neglect. I would put The Moderation at the Chewing gum on hot tarmac / My Dad's treacle toffee level (This is extremely bad if you hadn't have guessed!!) Still the outside looks nice but as the saying goes Apperances can be deceiving."
