ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Duck! Incoming pool ball! The Northumberland is a traditional pub in that there's a lounge bar and a public bar. The pool table's round the lounge bar side where there's also a stage/dance floor for quality entertainment on the weekend and a big screen with projector for the footy. On our Thursday night visit the landlady had to unlock the door for us to checkout the lounge bar where there was some nice looking booth style wooden seating. The wooden floor and perhaps seen better days though. There's pictures on the walls to brighten the place up and cover up suspicious stains and holes. Talking of suspicious markings there was a very large moldy water stain on the ceiling - so don't sit under there! The service behind the bar was friendly enough and the locals congregated in the public bar were a very lively bunch - the crisp munching dog was more interested in her bar snacks though. And who can blame her? Not the place for quiet retiring types. G.
The landlady was nice and friendly actually and you are never sure what kind of a reception you will get when you come into other peoples locals. The guys in the public bar seemed friendly enough as well, but we did confuse everyone as they did ask us whether we were the visiting darts team! Not likely with G and his lady in tow anyway!! I think I've mentioned his appalling darts skills before! His aim is so poor the dog would have been in danger of ending up with more holes than any living animal needs! I probably shouldn't have said that should I. The board would have been fine though. Yes, the lounge bar had to be opened for us but it's a sizeable area with a pool table, small stage and a couple of booths to sit in for a bit of privacy. I didn't notice any Ducks, but the incoming pool balls had left their mark! S.
Yep, it's strange the way my darts end up flying towards your head! G.

BEER EXPERIENCE

Tetleys and John Smiths to fly a slightly tatty dis-coloured flag for standard bitters. A few lagers. Wine available for the ladies. Actually the tetleys was fine indeed. G.
A beer on a pump would have been nice and I don't think they had one on the go? or was it just not avail when we were there? Marie seemed to like the wine! S.

VISITOR FEEDBACK [Give Your Feedback]

"This was the closest pub to where I lived, yet seldom did I stop in there. The clientele are not particularly friendly (and some seemed dangerous). At one time the staff were okay, but there was some kind of "event" or "scandal" and it closed for awhile. When Northumberland reopened it was seedier than it had been before. Avoid this place."

"Terrible pub filled with local idiots who seemed intent on having a fight for no reason, with anyone there. Sums up everything that is wrong with Reading. Avoid."
