RE-REVIEW: 5 October 2005 |
Nothing seems to change in O'Neills, despite all the surrounding town centre pubs closing, getting re-painted, and opening with a new name. O'Neills is exactly the same since the last review, except perhaps a few sofas being moved around a bit. All the good points are still there - the table service and the traditional pub atmosphere despite it being an Irish themed bar. It's OK really but not that exciting. It does have a dark feel to the place, somehow managing to lack natural light - perhaps not helped by the brown walls everywhere. Still, if you manage to get the non-smoking corner with the sofas it has a nice enough feel. G.

Irish theme bar. Not sure what makes it Irish though other than the beer and Irish pictures on the walls. Not that we took advantage, but they usually do table service if you're grouped around a table - a big plus if you're too lazy to reach the bar and saves ever running out of beer - an essential Irish commodity. BEER EXPERIENCE |
Serves Guinness and Caffreys to make it Irish. Hmmm... Personally I needed a nice cold lager after sweating like a pig in the London heat all day long. And that pint of Grolsch was exactly what I needed. The Caffreys (on the re-review) was just a pint a froth - really not that great at all. The Guinness was better, it's supposed to be imported from Dublin nowdays, but not being a regular drinker of the stuff I couldn't tell you if it's any better than it was before. G.

"not too bad, and too the lady who complained about having "all ice and no cocktail" im sure that's a slight exaggeration, and as a cocktail bar maid im sick to the teeth of people not grasping the concept of having loads of ice in a drink - it's partly what makes a cocktail in the first place!!!"

"Great for quick allday breakfast or simple lunch at weekends, and I've always found staff very friendly and helpful. And great crowd for live music Friday and Saturday evenings! Good lager and good orange juice!"

"Like most pubs in Reading the beer is too expensive, nearly £3 for a pint of guisiness!? The place has a friendly atmosphere but they need to sort their heating out. While watching the England v NZ games this winter my hand nearly froze to my Extra cold Guisness."

"The cocktails were terrible. All ice and no cocktail and the manager was incredibly rude. What do expect from a man called Jaqculine."
