ORIGINAL REVIEW:
8 June 2004

Lots of tables out in the open air in the middle of the town is a big plus for these summer evenings. Outside areas and the town don't usually go together, and this is ideal for people watching. I would put "lady watching" but might get in trouble. Automatically scores high points for that - although there were a worrying number of tramps around. Very neat and tidy inside (although a strange empty tub of Heinz mayonnaise in the bogs serving a mysterious purpose) and a quiet bar serving decent beer. A great day time pub (in a café style rather than olde world pub) inside or outside, but not the place to get on down, baby. G.
Well put, not sure what I can add to this very thorough and well researched review. I didn't notice the tramps though. Where were they then? Also, you have to say, the selection of tasty looking beers was excellent and means this pub is going to get a return visit at some time I think. This is the main plus really along with outside seating for a summer evening. 4.5 is a bit strong though G, do you not think you need to bring that score down a touch? S.
You could only see the tramps from my side of the table - if you know what I'm saying. Maybe the score was a little high but that summer weather, "scenery" and tasty beer went right to my head. G.
Stop with the 'scenery' already. We all know what you mean, so just come out an say it. S.

BEER EXPERIENCE

Great! 4 real ales! Rotating real ales too, so I feel another visit should be in order. Local beers too. Piper's Purse was one of those fruity numbers that grew on you. Tasted like it should make the head spin but not actually that strong at all. Mild slipped down a treat, 'beer tasting squash but not watery' if I remember rightly. You could probably drink twenty pints of the stuff and still walk in a straight line, although you'd need plenty of visits to the bog. Good or bad? Hmmm.... Perfect for a warm evening though. G.
Let me put something straight here. If Graham thinks he could have 20 pints and still walk in a straight line he is very much mistaken. He's seeing 'rotating' beers after a lightweight 1 and a 1/2. Deluded fool! S.
Dec 2004: Popped in just before Christmas for a lunch time couple of beers and discovered only two cask ales on the go - a Loddon and a festive brew. Bit disappointing compared to the previous visit!. G.

VISITOR FEEDBACK [Give Your Feedback]

"Great to see guest beers and a council run place providing a slightly alternative place to go in reading - some good music sometimes i.e. bohemian nite (thurs) and bands on sat"
